Our roots
Pioneering the future of global healthcare from Nakanoshima, Osaka
The Nakanoshima Eye Center, which opened at the newly established Nakanoshima Qross, an international hub for future healthcare, is committed to providing cutting-edge advanced ophthalmic care tailored to each and every patient worldwide, leveraging its collaborative relationship with the Department of Ophthalmology at Osaka University Graduate Shcool of Medicine. The fact that this Eye Center, driven by the vision of shaping the future of ophthalmology, has opened its doors in Nakanoshima is a serendipitous “connection” that could be described as fate.
The patriots who laid the foundation for Japanese medicine at Tekijuku
Founded in 1838 (Tenpo 9) in Kitahama, Osaka City, during the Edo period, Tekijuku is famous for nurturing many talented individuals who became key figures in the Meiji Restoration, such as Yukichi Fukuzawa. Tekijuku's founder, Kohan Ogata, was a leading expert in Dutch medicine. Many students who studied Dutch medicine at Tekijuku went on to open medical practices in their hometowns, contributing to regional healthcare development, as recorded in historical documents. Tekijuku later became the predecessor of Osaka University's Graduate School of Medicine.
And then, we will proceed to Nakanoshima, the land of its roots
In 1849 (Kaei 2), Tekijuku established a smallpox prevention clinic. The institution made significant contributions to the community as a medical institution, providing education as well as treatment and prevention. In 1869 (Meiji 2), it was renamed Osaka Temporary Hospital and opened. In 1879 (Meiji 12), it was relocated to Nakanoshima as the Osaka Public Hospital. Consequently, the buildings of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Science of Osaka University were constructed across the Dojima River from the hospital. The site where these edifices previously stood is now occupied by "Nakanoshima Cross" and the Nakanoshima Eye Center.
Nakanoshima is noteworthy as the birthplace of the Tekijuku Academy, an institution that has produced numerous medical professionals and has contributed to the development of medicine in Japan. For our eye center, which is committed to pioneering the future of ophthalmic treatment worldwide, this place truly represents our roots. We at Nakanoshima Eye Center will strive to lead the way in cutting-edge ophthalmic medicine and advance toward the creation of new future medical care, never forgetting the lofty aspirations of our predecessors.
